1. Start Training at Least 4 Weeks Early
The Kedarnath trek is 16km one way and involves a steep ascent of nearly 1,500m. Even if you're reasonably fit, daily walks of 5–8km for 4 weeks before the trek will make a significant difference to your enjoyment and recovery time.
2. Book Your Accommodation in Advance
Kedarnath gets extremely crowded from May to June and September to October. GMVN guesthouses at Kedarnath fill up weeks in advance. Camps near the temple are also limited. Book at least 30–45 days before your travel date.
DM Holidays pre-books accommodation for all clients, so you're guaranteed a bed — no scrambling at the last minute!
3. Register on the Char Dham Portal
Online registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in is mandatory. Carry a printout of your registration and a government ID. Your biometric smart card will be scanned at Sonprayag before you proceed to Gaurikund.
4. Understand the Weather
Weather at Kedarnath is highly unpredictable. Clear mornings can turn into afternoon thunderstorms within hours. Always start early (by 6–7am from Gaurikund) to complete the ascent before afternoon rains roll in.
5. Altitude Sickness is Real
Ascend slowly, drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol for 48 hours before the trek, and carry Diamox (125mg) — consult a doctor first. If you feel severe headache, nausea, or breathlessness, descend immediately.
6. Horse & Palanquin — Book at Gaurikund
Horses and dolis (palanquins) are available for hire at Gaurikund, priced at ₹4,000–₹8,000 (one way, 2025 rates). Lines can be very long — arrive early. Ponies are not permitted above a certain point near the temple itself.
7. Helicopter Option
Helicopter services operate from Phata, Sirsi, Guptkashi, and Agastmuni helipads. A round trip costs approximately ₹6,000–₹8,500 per person (2025 rates) and takes just 10 minutes each way vs 5–6 hours on foot. Book through the official Uttarakhand government helicopter portal to avoid touts.
8. Carry the Right Gear
Trekking poles (can be rented at Gaurikund for ₹100), a good rain poncho, warm fleece, water, high-energy snacks (dry fruits, protein bars), and a head torch are essential. Mobile signal is poor — download offline maps.
9. Darshan Queue Management
The temple opens at 5am and closes at 3pm (mid-day break 1–2pm). Arrive before 5am for the shortest queues. VIP/priority darshan tickets can be purchased at the temple counter. Average wait time in peak season: 2–4 hours.
10. Plan Your Return Well
Don't rush your descent. Many injuries happen on the way down. Aim to start your return by 11am to reach Gaurikund before dark. The last vehicles from Sonprayag to Guptkashi depart around 7pm.
DM Holidays Kedarnath-Badrinath packages include all logistics — transport, accommodation near Gaurikund, guide support, and backup plans in case of weather disruptions.
