Haridwar: The Gateway of God
Haridwar (literally "gateway to God") is one of the seven holiest cities in Hinduism. The unmissable Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri ghat takes place every evening at sunset — a mesmerising ritual of fire, devotion, and bells that draws thousands daily. Mansa Devi Temple (accessible by ropeway or 3km trek) and Chandi Devi Temple are the major shrines. The Kumbh Mela is held here every 12 years.
Rishikesh: Yoga Capital of the World
Rishikesh, 24km from Haridwar, is where the Ganga emerges from the Himalayas and where spiritual seekers, yoga practitioners, and adventure enthusiasts converge. Don't miss Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula (iconic suspension bridges), the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat (7pm), and the Parmarth Niketan ashram. For adventure: white river rafting (Grade II–IV, March–November) and bungee jumping from a 83m platform are world-class experiences.
Spend the night in Rishikesh before your Char Dham journey. A 5:30am aarti at Triveni Ghat followed by an early departure to Haridwar puts you on the road by 7am — ideal timing.
Where to Stay
Haridwar has excellent budget to mid-range hotels near Har Ki Pauri (₹800–₹3,000/night). Rishikesh offers stylish riverside resorts and yoga retreats (₹1,500–₹8,000/night). For pilgrims, GMVN Tourist Bungalows in Haridwar offer great value. DM Holidays uses handpicked hotels in both cities for all Char Dham groups.
Getting There
Haridwar has its own railway station — well-connected to Delhi (5hrs by Shatabdi), Mumbai, and major cities. Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) is 35km from Rishikesh, with regular flights from Delhi (55 min). From Delhi, it's 230km by road (4–5hrs). DM Holidays provides Delhi pickup for all Char Dham groups departing from Delhi.
