Char Dham Yatra 2025: The Complete Pilgrim's Guide

DM Holidays Team April 10, 2025 8 min read
The Char Dham Yatra — a pilgrimage to the four sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — is considered one of the most spiritually significant journeys in Hinduism. Nestled in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, these four dhams are believed to wash away all sins and grant moksha (liberation). In 2025, the yatra season opens in late April and closes in November, drawing millions of devout pilgrims from across India and the world.

When to Visit: Opening Dates 2025

The Char Dham temples follow the Hindu calendar for their opening and closing dates. In 2025, the approximate dates are: Yamunotri & Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya (around April 30), Kedarnath opens on May 2, and Badrinath opens on May 4. All four dhams typically close on the auspicious occasion of Diwali and Bhai Dooj in October–November.

The best time to visit is May–June (pre-monsoon) for clear skies and manageable crowds, or September–October (post-monsoon) after the rains clear for crystal-clear Himalayan views.

Permits & Registration

Since 2022, pilgrims are required to register online on the official Uttarakhand government portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) before undertaking the Char Dham Yatra. Registration is free and mandatory. You'll need to provide your name, address, age, ID proof, and an emergency contact. A biometric smart card is issued that is checked at designated points along the route. Medical fitness certificates are recommended for seniors (60+).

The Four Sacred Shrines

1. Yamunotri — Situated at 3,291m, this is the source of River Yamuna and goddess Yamuna's abode. The trek from Janki Chatti (6km each way) is the shortest of all four dhams. Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in the hot springs here as a religious offering.

2. Gangotri — At 3,048m, Gangotri is where the Ganges (Bhagirathi) descends from the Himalayas. The actual source, Gaumukh glacier, is 18km further by trek. The white-granite Gangotri Temple is a breathtaking sight against snow-capped peaks.

3. Kedarnath — The most challenging and revered of the four, at 3,583m. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The 16km trek from Gaurikund is steep but magnificent. Helicopter services are available from Phata and Sirsi.

4. Badrinath — The easiest of the four to reach by road, at 3,133m. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this is the last stop on the Char Dham circuit. The colourful temple facade and the backdrop of Neelkanth peak make it the most photographed of all four dhams.

What to Pack

Pack warm layers (temperatures can drop to 5°C even in May), a quality rain poncho for monsoon months, comfortable trekking shoes with ankle support, sunscreen (UV levels are intense at altitude), a water bottle, basic medicines (ibuprofen, Diamox for altitude), and a power bank. Mobile networks can be patchy — download offline maps of the route.
